Oh, What Beautiful Morning

What a morning. This morning is the definition of a summer morning. I stepped outside into the warm sun and the day that lay before me just seemed endless with possibilities. It was obviously the start to a hot summer day but there was still a slight hint of the cool of the evening wafting up from between the thick green blades of grass. Everything seemed speckled with the shade of leaves. The sky was particularly high with wispy white clouds lazily hanging miles overhead.

On my street, the public works department was planting trees today. One of them will be visible from our bedroom. Another will be visible from our living room. The workers smiled and nodded as I passed. One of them, an older man raking up the area around one of the new trees, actually waved to me. I felt like I was in one of Norman Rockwell's better dreams.

On days like this, you can almost smell the possibilities. I should be sitting on a grassy hill beneath an old tree at the edge of a river. Or I should be riding my bike to the store to get an iced-tea. Or I should be eating brunch with friends in the patio of a local eatery. I'm not doing any of those things. Nope. Instead, I'm in an over-air-conditioned and flourescently-lit room staring at a flickering computer screen.

But from my window I can vicariously enjoy the day by watching the throngs of pedestrians in their shorts and sunglasses. Hope y'all have the day off.

You and me both. But here's to a nice day and a happy July, anyway.
