The other morning, I looked out the window at the backyard and noticed that the squirrels had once again managed to knock over our suet feeder. "Wiley squirrels!" I proclaimed.

Later, as I was leaving the house, I noticed that the gate to the backyard was swinging wide open. Had I left it open the night before? It's possible. I did take out the trash in the late hours and it was raining. Leaving the gate open seems like the kind of thing that I would be capable of doing in such a situation.

I walked up the driveway to shut the gate and, in doing so, I noticed that the suet feeder, which I had thought the squirrels brought down, was actually lying about six feet from its hole in the ground, and it was smashed into many pieces. Something told me that this was not the work of our clownish squirrel gang. I went back to investigate and quickly determined that we had been visited by a bear - a big old burly lumbering black bear.

Maybe next time the bear will take the trash out for you.
