So, in this new energy bill, (I'm not going to go into a political tirade about the fact that oil companies are already making record profits, despite the fact that we are all paying over two bucks a gallon, and in this energy bill they are going to be given large tax breaks - don't worry) one of the proposals is to extend daylight savings time.
On this issue, Fred Upton (R-Mich) said, "Kids across the nation will soon rejoice," as they get another hour of daylight trick-or-treating. (Now, I'm not going to go off on a tirade about how he's suggesting that safety on Halloween ought to be a reason to support this proposal and how this nation-of-fear is going way over the top - I'm sure he was just trying to be cute). The thing is...who wants to trick-or-treat in the daylight?!?
In my memories, the whole awesome thing about going out on Halloween, besides the candy, was being out in the spooky dark where Jack O'Lanterns were glowing and tree branches were frighteningly shadowy against the night sky. If anything, kids would be rejoicing if they got to go trick-or-treating for another hour after-dark. Which they would be, if this country wasn't so terrified of everything and everyone all the time.
Give me back my Halloween Moon, Upton!
