That's a very interesting article, but it leaves out one main point. Some cranky old farts like me will still buy the ol' fashioned pre-made variety of CDs because *it's fun to collect them*. I have never downloaded a song and burned a copy on to a cd. Yes, it would be cheap and easy and I could probably make better artwork for the cds than the record company. I enjoy spending hours in a record store, looking for hard-to-find CDs or just hanging out and waiting to be kicked out for loitering (which never happens anyway). If there are still people who buy newly-pressed vinyl records today, there will be a market for pre-recorded cds for a long time to come.

I'm excited to watch the next few years unfold in the music world, mostly because I think the artists will be the ones who benefit the most. At least the smart ones. Stories like the Globe article are funny to me since they assume everyone is already downloading songs illegally on to their ipods (or, that everyone has a cell phone). The majority of people who buy music probably don't know how, don't have time or just don't want to spend any more time sitting at a computer waiting for a disc to be pressed. But if big mainstream record stores like Strawberries (an ex-employer of Tony and mine) go belly-up, that's fine by me. I would love it if the mom & pop stores made a comeback.
