Fawns Fashion Show / Lord Russ' Open Mic

Went to Lord Russ' Open Mic last night at The Basement here in Northampton, MA. Lesa Bezo was the featured performer and our friends Casper and The Cookies were in town. First we had a Fawns practice for our crazy fashion show gig coming up this Sunday, so we got there too late to hear Lord Russ' opening set.

The weekly Wednesday Open Mic is a strange thing there at the Basement. There is an extreme mix of different performers. Some are first-timers, some are seasoned, some are just plain weird. It's a dark cave-like adventure into the underbelly of late-night weekday freakdom.

Casper and the Cookies, who had played in Boston the night before, came out to visit. Based out of Athens, they are currently on a five week tour and they had the night off. Today they drive to Toronto. Right now, they are sitting in my house where I just left them.

They played at the open mic right before Lesa. It was nice to see them stripped down to just an acoustic guitar, you could hear the harmonies and lyrics very well. They're a good band.

Lesa was a show stopper. She played her red electric guitar and sang favorites from the Fawns catalog. Ken and I stood in the back corner singing all the harmonies and hooks to ourselves. It was great, the people dug her. For her last number I brought up my melodica and we did a melodica and voice only version of The Police's "Walking on the Moon". Good times.

"What's this about a fashion show?" You ask, referring to the first paragraph of this entry. Well, on Sunday at The Elevens there is a fund raiser fashion show being put on by Alias Salon. It is a benefit for Safe Passage and The Fawns will be providing the music for the first half of the event. It starts at 7:00 and is only seven dollars at the door and five in advance. You can get tickets at the salon on Pleasant St.

We did this event last year and it was a really fun and surreal time. They built a cat walk to stick out form the stage and brought in a lighting system and a whole bunch of models. This year the theme is Night Wear. You should come.
