We've been keeping it under wraps, so to speak, but work on the new School for the Dead album has been going on almost daily for the last few weeks. In the sweltering closed-off sound proof bomb shelter, I've been strumming and singing and listening during the late-night hours.
And, so, I am once again hitting the befuddling hurtle that I always hit when making an album. How should it sound? How many coats of polyurethane should it have? Matte or glossy? Dead Milkmen or Steely Dan? It's a mystery. A bloody mystery.
I'd like to play to our strengths. But we don't have any.
So, I've begun once again to listen. I'm listening to everything I hear. While listening to music, I'm dissecting it. How loud are those drums? Do they sound like they are all in the same room? How many voices are in that voice? Just one? Fifteen? How present are the guitars and how many of them are there and what are they doing?
I'm trying to learn. Trying to figure out what I like. But, man, I just like it all.

sounds very fun, the strumming and listening in late night hours, and trying to figure out how many layers of what.... you, SFTD, are all so naturally gifted that i'd just say Go With Your Gut, and don't worry what anyone else is doing or has done.
I completely agree with you, Dennis, about going with your gut. Unfortunately, my gut and I are currently not on speaking terms.
Dead Milkmen.
