Boring Dream - A New School for the Dead Song

Fifteen years ago, I started writing a song called, Boring Dream. I finished it a couple of months ago.

I don't believe I ever wrote down the lyrics and I definitely never recorded it, but somehow it's stuck with me all these years. A few months ago, I decided that that was probably a good sign. It had sticking power. So, when I was walking home from Dennis Crommett's Cd Release show, I finished up the lyrics to the last verse. Finally.

Last week, I taught it to the band. I'm hoping that this Friday at our big show (The Elevens, Northampton, MA) we can debut it. I say I'm hoping because it doesn't appear that we will be able to all practice together before the concert. So, if we play it, it'll be on that one rushed session where I just kind of showed everyone the general structure.

But, who knows, with a band of guys like Brian, Max, Ken, and Tony? I had considered the song as a kind of difficult one. Lots of chords, lots of little parts, stops and starts, some harmonies, but these guys chimed in with their instruments before I had even played it through for them once. Tony assured, me that it is an easy one. Crazy, I was sure it was gonna be a real hurdle. My guess is that we will probably try it on Friday even if we don't get a chance to go over it beforehand. That means that the boys will really be playing it completely for the very first time. I have no doubts that they can pull it off. It'll be fun to see what happens.

The song is called Boring Dream. It all started because I really did have a boring dream. I can recall saying to someone, "Last night I had the most boring dream." Saying that amused me. Usually people describe their dreams as weird or crazy. Which is, when you think about it, pretty silly, since dreams are almost always crazy. That's just what dreams are. So really, the crazy dream would be one that wasn't crazy, one that was pretty mundane. To have mundane dreams, that's crazy.

So this phrase became a song and over the years, the meaning of the song has changed a few times, new lyrics, new ideas, but always the same chords and melody and structure. And always the same first line, "Last night I had the most boring dream".
