Check One Two, Check One Two

What is the story with all these ladies and their check books? Why are people always writing checks? Today at the cafe, the woman in front of me wrote a check for a cup of coffee! Another one wrote one for a sandwich and as I was leaving a third was just getting out her check book to pay for whatever she was going to order.

Is that normal? I've never written a check at a cash register in my life...and yet I still manage to buy a whole lot of stuff all the time. What is the point of carrying around a checkbook and pen, when you could just carry cash or an ATM card? Is it just habit? Seems like a pain in the neck to me. Is it so that you can put off paying for a couple of days? Is that why so many ladies were writing checks this morning? Because payday is tomorrow? Man, I hope they aren't living so paycheck to paycheck that they can't afford a sandwich or coffee at the moment.

Isn't check writing kind of outdated? Didn't that kind of go out of style in the forties?

What do I know? I'm not complaining, I just think it's weird. And why is it always women? Have you ever seen a male patron write a check? Why is that?

(I've decided that I need to get back into the habit of writing more in the Rockumentary. Hmmmm. Maybe I should be more discerning.)

Thanks Brian!

I don't write checks for coffee and sandwiches, but I did just write a really big check for my new guitar and I'll write another big one when my saddle pick-up is installed... I could've just crossed the street and taken out the cash, I guess...

I remember this lady (and I think it was about fifteen years ago) writing a check for an egg roll at the Crystal Mall food court. It's forever imprinted in my memory... along with a dream that consisted of the Count from Sesame Street eating bits of my brain.

First, My wife writes checks or uses a charge card, but still doesn't know her PIn for the ATM or to use the card as a debit card. It's weird to me, but whatever. She can, at least, balance a checkbook--an arcane art that has always escaped me.

Second, I am a pro-feminist as they (they being guys) come, but I must respectfully disagree with Brian that *cutely* noting a difference between sexes is always "sexist."

OK, I'm sure Bri was just busting 'Ning's chops, but I wanted to make the point anyway. Because of the way we are socialized, there ARE traits that are more dominant to one gender than the other. Check writing at registers does eem to be one of them, for better or worse! (Sermon now concluded. Sorry!)

I just assumed that Brian was purposely being silly since my post was obviously not sexist in any way.

Henning, I just love this little catfight that was started here. Women love to watch men do that. It's the unexpected things that make this blog fun to read.

ps I agree debit cards are way better. I hate being in line behind a check writer. What in blazes are they doing, writing a book???
