First off,
Ning is alive and well.
Second--
I recently saw some of the Dick Cavett rock guests 3-DVD set.
I love Cavett.
And really, it made me think in some ways, we truly are living in more conservative times.
And also, I could imagine the young Cheneys of the world watching these episodes in their living rooms in 1969 or so and thinking "we must stop these hippies!"
David Crosby ranting about oil companies and pollution.
The Jefferson Airplane singing about being seen as "dirty, dangerous, violent and young" and calling for a revolution.
Dick Cavett making drug jokes? "So, Grace and Joni. All three of us are Scorpios. We're described as having a penchant for overdoing sex and stimulants. Is that true at all?"
So yes, they were dirty stoned hippies (not Cavett--the others), but they knew what the hell they were talking about.
But the Bowie interview? My god. After it was done I felt all sniffly and jittery.
It was 1974 and Bowie was at the height of his coke phase. And really, no one should have allowed him on national television. I think 95% of the viewing audience probably assumed he was nervous and had a cold.
Anyway,
see you all when I get back.
