Crossing the street with Hannah in Northampton yesterday, reviewing what we had learned the week before while crossing the street in Amherst:
- Hannah, look at the signal before we cross. What do you see?
- Um, an orange hand.
- Can we cross yet?
- Nope.
- And when is it safe for us?
- Only when we see white people.

Huh? What?
I wondered if leaving that ambiguous ending might confuse people. For all I know, crosswalks are different in other cities. Basically, our crosswalks have two signals- an orange hand meaning "don't cross" and then a silhouettte of a walking person signifying that it's time to cross. In contrast to the orange hand, the walking figure is bright white.
So- "When is it safe for us (to cross), dear 3 year old daughter, who has no concept of race prejudice?" "Only when the signal displays the white figure of a person walking, or, white people."
are you trying for Father of the Year? Or just preparing for life in Hardwick?
