AFAWK

I just received a note that a site for the Mark Mulcahy tribute collection is up.
Three of the songs on the collection were recorded at Rub Wrongways studios (Ning, when will there be a site dedicated to the studio, its Squash court, its Hungarian masseuse and its IMAX theater?).
I also happen to supply the drums on 3 songs--School for the Dead's "I Just Shot myself....", Lo Fine's 'Everywhere" and Zeke Fiddler's "The Backyard".
Eww..Jack, our nasally challenged cat, just walked by and sneezed on my hand, leaving residue on the screen and my hand.
Anyway, AFAWK

Though he's not on the tribute, I'll segue here onto the subject of Ken. I guess he went back to WA on Sunday. You didn't know he'd gone back? Neither did I. Oh. No goodbyes, no fanfare.
However, he did manage to play about 12 gigs with various folks, record 1/3 of the bass prts for Sitting Next to Brian (tentativ title: Unevent) and all the bass parts for the new Fawns (tent title: Explode!)
Well, Ken just doesn't record his bass parts. He ends up shaping some of the songs he plays on by bringing out dormant elements in the songs that inspire changes to the arrangements. I know I always take the bait and run with it. (fishing, football-same thing) if it wasn't for cooler heads, one would go in with 10 songs and leave with 10 different songs.

I've been reading this big new book which documents all the Monkees recording sessions. When Nesmith would produce, he'd willfully stall so they'd go into overtime so the session musicians would get paid double or triple. "Man, fuck it. it's only money" he says to the session guys. 'You're a goddamn communist" replies drummer Hal Blaine, obviously psyched that he could probably now afford an addition to his house.

What else? Oh, remember the Scanditour I did with Don Lennon (see June '03 archives of the Rockumentary). Well, I may do some more gigs with him in the fall after his new album comes out.

'telse? About 3 years ago, after both Joe Pernice and Frank Padellaro hyped the High Llamas to me, I finally had a copy of Gideon Gaye (Giddy and Gay) burned for me. My expectations were too high. I just thought they were trying way too hard to be Smile-era Beach Boys.
Well, sometimes you need to let a CD sit in your collection for 3 years. I listened to it again, and yeah, there' ssome filler, and now that the real brian Wilson has put out he real Smile it's a moot point. But what really got me was their spot on Steely Dan imitations (listen to "Checking In, Checking Out" and "Track Goes By").

Ok, that may be all for now. Except I want a tshirt with Sherman Hemsley on it.
