I'm digging some Steely Dan to no end at the moment.
However, I'm here to report on The Pixies show at the Mullins..
"Oh, did they do _______?"
I'd say that there's a75% chance that the answer is yes. The advantage to having really short songs, is that in 75 minutes you can do like 30 songs. I may be off in those specific numbers.
Anyway, due to Bezo's connections, we found ourselves in the "family and friends" section. At one bizarre moment, we also found that the two seats between us and a couple girls belonged to the other famous Kim bass player and her husband. We stood up to let her through to her seat--sans Thurston-- she stood for a second, and decided to watch the show from somewhere else. W stood up again and let her though again. Lesa and I thought of various reasons she didn't want to sit with us.
We spotted several friends and famous folks out in the crowd. It was fun watching the people.
When we walked in, The Bennies were half way through their set--WOW, it's our drummer pal Donnie Macauley, of Ware River Club rockin out on the big big stage!
Mission of Burma--wow, they're legendary. I only know a hand full of their songs--mostly from mix tapes my friend Todd made me in the old days. Roger Miller, the guitarist, has tinitis, so he wears these huge headphones on stage.
He also apparently has a scorned woman who stands outside their shows and screams and holds up a sign about his neglect of their child and his "mid life crisis". She wanted the crowd to yell things at him, but he looked like he was having too much fun. It seems like they have some things to talk about, he and the lady--they've let this little miscommunication go too far.
Between sets, they were playing awesome 60's garage psych and I heard "Five Years Ahead of My Time" by The Third Bardo. If anyone has that song on CD, PLEASE email it to me? I love it in a teenage way, and I only have it on vinyl.
So, The Pixies. So damn good. Sounded great--you could close your eyes, and realize their voices are in great shape. The energy was there. I think Lovering messed up the beat one or twice.
But wow, it was just one gem after another. I couldn't sit still.
Afterwards, well...we mulled, and looked at our shoes as The Deal sisters passed, as various folks introduced themselves to Frank Black Francis and Lovering. Mascis was there, but it's my fate to be in 100 rooms with him without ever exchanging a word. I think we're on 79. Macauley and Mulcahy were the saving graces that I could talk to and feel like I knew someone.
The tour has been described as "Dry", since a member or two has gone sober. So we knew if we left we weren't going to be missong any debauchery.
So we headed off to make our own debauchery at Hugo's. There we saw Henning standing behind a wall of silence.
