In 11th grade I noticed that all the cool chicks (the ones that in no way resembled Paula Abdul) were in an after school group called HEAL, which focused on environmental concerns. Naturally (no pun) I joined. I met my long time friend Joni after she overheard me singing "Meeting Place" and soon, she was giving me an awesome XTC mix tape.
In any case, later that year, I was helping to write the music for, and playing drums in a musical called Ecological Follies, which was largely written by the group's head, and my homeroom and philosophy teacher, Ms. Maloney Brown. She assigned "Siddartha", which is my fave book and in any case, long story short, I am still a closet environmentalist hippie.
It's a great thing. But what's greater is going to the following sites:
Redjellyfish.com and
Ecologyfund.com
and clicking on these things which allow you to save (for free, and w/out any signing up for anything really) rainforest land, domestic land, wildlife reserves, feed orphaned chimpanzees, reduce pollution, etc. It's all paid for ahead of time, by groups with big bucks, but I dunno, you feel good afterwards. On Redjellyfish, I've saved 400 sq feet of rainforest land and fed chimps 23 cups of food. Love those chimps!!
