Today I went over Gideon Freudmann's house and improvised music for 3 hours with him, Joe Boyle and Mark Herschler (who I'd never formally met).
Years ago, I taught myself drums in part by playing along to 25 minute Cream, Grateful Dead, Hendrix etc jams, so that kind of stuff is a part of me. Though, yeah, I probably prefer the craft involved in carving out a good drum part in a pop song, it's pretty fun to step out into the cosmos every once in a while. I see it as going out and collecting tons of rocks (the kitchen sink-ness of the improvisation, discovering stuff you never thought you could do), then selecting the best ones to make something cool and useful out of (the pop song).
In any case, it made me think how it'd be so cool if we could have a Noho version of Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew (in NYC, then in LA) or Area Code 615 (in Nashville), where visiting artists in the 60's would always get the same musicians and producer ,and thus employ the Nashville Sound or the Hollywood sound. Henning could be the Phil Spector, Wrongways would be Gold Star and I would be, um, Hal Blaine? (self serving bastard, Brian!)
