What is the deal with this new Decemberists song, "Both Go Down Together"? Certainly they are aware that it sounds exactly like REM's "Losing My Religion". Is it a tribute to REM or something?
Clearly you are up on your popular music knowledge, declaring a song (which is actually titled "We Both Go Down Together") that was released in 2005 as new.
No, you are definitely right, I am not up on a lot of music. I called that song new because the local radio station I've been listening to has just recently started playing it.
I called it "Both Go Down Together" because when I finally checked out the radio station's play list, so I could find out the name of the song that sounded like "Losing My Religion" but sung by Colin Meloy, that's what they called it.
I like the Decemberists, though I am only really familiar with the radio hits. I've listened to a couple of albums here and there but only in passing.
Obviously, you are a big fan so I'm sorry if I offended you. I apologize for calling a three year old song new. But it definitely is a lot newer than "Losing My Religion" (which by the way, I also consider a newish R.E.M. song.)
Either way, I'm not trying to be mean. There's nothing terribly wrong with writing a song that sounds like another song. I'm certainly guilty of doing so myself.

No, I should apologize. I was being mean and ultra-defensive and shouldn't have been.
