it took 15 hours after the fact, but I now realize "hey, I know that dude!"
Last night M and I watched a new release from Pleasant Street video,"Mutual Appreciation".
I dug it a lot.
Black and white film is expensive, so I'm guessing the movie was shot and put through an iFilm program which includes things like random hairs and other things randomly appearing in the frame. But I could be way off and already someone is calling me a clueless ass.
I'm also guessing the cast are not really actors, because I truly felt like I was observing slices of my friends' lives---as opposed to a Reality Bites thing where it's actors acting like they're not acting.
In any case, it's a small cast, it takes place in current day NYC, with references to Boston, and concerns an indie rocker trying to establish himself in a new environment. Nothing much happens in the movie, but it's very compelling. The people are realistically nerdy and awkward.
Best of all, when the lead character sings his songs--at a rehearsal and then at a gig for about 18 people--they're all really good. And it's not that Hollywood thing where someone plugs a guitar into an amp and suddenly this 48 track, mastered, surround sound music comes roaring out. It sounds like a guitar, an amp and a crappy drumset through a suspect PA.
I was like "I wanna find out who wrote these songs, I dig 'em".
So I went to the above site and guess what? Bishop Allen.
Anyone? Anyone? Yes. SFTD played with, and spoke very highly of this band. I even said "I bet they become famous". Or something like that. See the movie.
