I neglected to mention:
one highlight for me in Amsterdam was happening upon a cool antique shop which turned out to be 1/3 a used record shop.
I coulda browsed all day, but thankfully I didn't because after only 10 minutes I found four things I wanted.
It was strange. Inside of me there is definitely a record-collecting geek. But I've always suppressed it because a) it's costly b) I like just being a nerd about the handful of bands I'm a nerd about c) it's hard work and I'm lazy d) my parents don't have a good basement for me to move into e) I'm a musician, damnit! (oh, wait. Peter Buck and Thurston Moore are two examples of hip rocker/record collector geek combos).
But I don't even browse record shops at home--rest assured, I spent most of my teenage years amassing vinyl, but never have the urge anymore. Good thing, since half of it burned last year.
In any case, I suddenly felt inspired to spend my Euros in this shop (I'm traditionally a conservative spender on vacations--mostly because I hate carrying more luggage than I arrived with).
So, after all that built up, what the frig did I get? Four things I'd never seen before and had no idea if they were good or not.
--Harry Nilsson "Sandman"
(from the peak of his partying LA days)
Neil Young "Journey Through the Past" soundtrack
(soundtrack to a movie that's very rare and stoner high concept)
Klaatu-Klaatu
(the band some thought were a reunited Beatles)
Leah Kunkel--I Run With Trouble
(mama Cass' sister, also part-time Noho based lawyer)
Still haven't listened to them, I'll let you know. I asked Ken if any were totally crazy rare and he said no.
