I never fall prey to internet lies and rumors--or at least I try not to-- so I was a little peeved when I found this to be false:
A couple of years back I read something on some site, quoting a Mike Nesmith interview where he said that he had co-written his 1976 single "Rio" with Bob Dylan, who requested no credit.
"Gee", I thought. "Cool". I could see them hanging together over margaritas in LA.
However....this has proven to be a damn haox. Nesmith says as much on his website. In fact, he says he's never even met him, though he's always been a fan.
In the end, it all makes sense. For Dylan, though his songs tend to have many verses, he's a plain-speaking guy. Nesmith, on the otherhand, likes to prove that his "learn a word a day" calendar makes a good gift every holiday season.
what of these lyrics could be Dylan-esque? Dylan's lyrics could rarely be called pretentious.
There's wings to the thought behind fancy,
There's wings to the thought behind play
And dancing to rhythms of laughter
Makes laughter the rhythm of rain.
What am I saying, I like this song.
In a releated thing, nesmith also recently said that as far as he knows, he was never even in the same room as Gram Parsons in his life, though he did jam with the Byrds around Sweetheart of the Rodeo time. Now that's odd. (Gram's on that album).
Hey guess what I'm gonna start thinking about more important things now. Thanks for your time.
