partial yays and nays of 2006

Well then.
A friend of a girlfriend makes her a birthday mix and each time it's played it gets to track 3 I say "wait! what was THAT song?" And she says "you asked that the last 3 times. It's a band called Midlake".
And thus I had my first fave new (ish) band of the year.

Now, I just read about how they used to be an acid jazz/funk band that played 25 minute long songs and the now singer was the sax player. Only when he discovered 70's "yacht rock"
did the genere shift happen.

In some ways that ruffles my purist feathers. I like something to be in one's blood--not "oh, I can do anything, so I'll do this now and it'll be better than others who love this stuff but just don't have the talent".

But that's, I guess, some weird uptight streak in me that needs to have a mojito and forget about it. I'd still love Midlake even if they were doing zydeco before.
Bear in mind, uptight Brian, all your fave psychedelic 60's bands started out playing the same blues songs.

The Raconteurs first cd came out in may which was a bad month for me. However, once I realized that 3 of the best songs played on the River
were by that band, I decided to hear the whole album.
Now I'm not a White Stripes fan. Too minimal and bluesy for me. I need melody, I need bells and whistles. Plus, they were way too approved by everyone--from the youngsters to the hipsters to the classic rockers like Jimmy Page etc. Again, my uptight feathers were causing my puritanical musical radar to mix the proverbial metaphorical cookie jar to hell.

Yikes. Anyway.. (I was verbally channeling the kitten chaos going on around me as I write this)

so I checks out the Raconteurs cd, Broken Boy Soldiers, and lo and behold and a bottle of bread, it is a cd that is pretty much awesome start to finish. It gets into my bloodstream and tickes the same receptors that are usually home to "Houses of the Holy" and "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake".
With some great Beatle-esque harmonies.

Lastly, our Ken made me a mix and included a Seattle band called
Fleet Foxes
YEE!! The tune, "In the Hot, Hot Rays", puts Emotional Rescue, Drums and Wires and next year into a blender and pours the most delicious smoothie that the Haymarket could only wish to own the rights to. Put it on!! Put it on now!!!! Then the listen to the other 3 tunes on the myspace page and download them and put them on your ipod and thank me by buying me a mojito.

NAYS:
I'll do it next time.
For now, follow the Yacht Rock link and laugh if you've never seen it before.
