By choosing this career, I've consigned myself not only to homework for the rest of my life but to constant, eternal heartbreak. Today's heartbreak? On the way back from lunch, I ran into Hope, 14 years old and not all that much taller than Hannah, in the hallway, breaking into a grin. "Hi, Mr. Westcott!" And then I notice as of today her smile is adorned by braces. The very first day wearing braces, to be a permanent fixture for the next 1 1/2 years.
Ouch.
