On the way home from NYC the other night, Ning brought up the concept of great moments in rock--meaning little fleeting moments in songs that just get you every time.
I had to think about it, but have come up with four.
The good things about these are that they're kind of personal and unique. Like the ones Ning mentioned, I never even thought about.
But here are mine:
1) Steely Dan-"Hey 19" after the final "Cuervo Gold...." line, there's a simple 6-note guitar line that ushers in the key change and the final chorus. I love it. It's dumb, yet unsettling and stimulating and a wonderful thing. Like a night of "Cuervo Gold and fine Columbian".
2) The Who-"Pictures of Lily"--again, going into the final chorus. "I don't feel bad at all, I don't feel bad at all" and Townshend hits two thin but trippy whammy-bar chords. Sounds best on a cheap radio.
3) Led Zeppelin- "Custard Pie"--at the end, the groove is happening, Plant is saying something like "drop down" or oneof those nonsense lead singer things.. and Bonham does two tom hits on the off beat that are just like two wrecking balls. I in fact quote it on the upcoming recorded version of the Fawns' "Any Day"
4) Rolling Stones-"Rocks Off". Oh, I can't really explain it. But it's in the final 30 seconds, and Charlie Watts' syncopation and the backing vocals get this tension for a second and Charlie just releases it by hitting the crash and goin back to a basic beat on the ride. Mick seems to appreciate it with a "woooo!".
Gets me every time.
classic rock. aint classic for nothin'.
except Foghat. Classic for no good reason at all.
