Usually, these letters are accompanied by an address to which they would like me to send free cds. Sometimes the letter is from Russia, sometimes India.
So, yeah, I mean, I'm not amazingly web-savvy or anything but, I know this is a scam of some kind. Maybe the guy just wants free cds. I don't know. The first few times I got one of these, I wasn't totally positive that it wasn't on the up-n-up, but after getting a few, it became clear.
This time I decided to google the thing. I picked a choice phrase from the middle of the letter, search on it, and to my surprise and delight I found a band that used the letter on it's website in its LETTERS, FAN BUZZ, COMMENTS & TESTIMONIALS section. I do not believe it was done in humor. I will not reveal the band name.
The quote that they used was word-for-word the paragraph that I posted above. It was dated September 29, 2004 and was from someone named Slim Slim. My last one was from Don Bitalac.
I love the internet.

you know, i too have received those and wondered what the heck was up with them. i think they're either just weird or we should book a northampton scene invasion of the phillipines, russia, and seychelles.
