D'oh!

At 2:45 in the afternoon on Friday, May 27, The Fawns (Lesa Bezo, Brian Marchese, guest Ken Maiuri, and I) arrived at the studios of WRNX 100.9 FM. We were scheduled to appear on Donnie's Used Cars, the afternoon show hosted by Donnie Moorhouse.

Brian and I had done this show before with the Aloha Steamtrain so we knew what to expect. We were to be very pared down, with Lesa on acoustic guitar and Brian just playing a snare drum and our job was to play six or seven partial songs that acted as music beds that were faded out into commercial breaks, then at the end of the show, we would play one full song.

When I was bringing our stuff into the studio, Donnie informed me that there was going to be another guest in the studio as well. It was none other than Mike Scully, one of the original writers for the Simpsons, as well as Everybody Loves Raymond and number of other shows, and as it turns out, who started his career selling jokes to Yakov Smirnoff.

Now, those of you who know me, know that I have seen just about ever single Simpson's episode ever. Wow, Mike Scully. Cool. Very cool.

So, the show started, we met Mike, we talked between bits, he was very nice and super funny, Donnie gave him a Fawns CD, we played our songs very well, and we promoted our show that was later that night. It was fun. At one point I threw a little snippet of the Simpson's theme in the intro to "Stop Talkin'". It all went swimmingly well.

We chose the brand new "Snow Day" for our full song at the end of the show and it sounded great. That song is an instant hit, I tells ya.

Donnie Moorhouse and Dave Sears were incredibly kind and supportive throughout the afternoon. We're so lucky to have radio stations in this area that care so much about music, even music by people who aren't in People Magazine. Thank you, WRNX.

Oh one more thing, before we started, Joan Holliday, who is the DJ for the time slot right before Donnie's (and who played "Time of the Season" by the Zombies as we were driving to the studio) pulled me aside to show me that she likes the cover of School for the Dead's "The New You" so much that she keeps it propped up on her desk in front of her computer screen like a family portrait. She says it makes her happy. Well, that makes me happy. And now, be honest, aren't you happy too?
