Dateline: mid-May 2005--
Henning, Lesa, Ken Maiuri and I gather in Rub Wrongways studio to begin recording the new Fawns record. Ken already knows half the songs from playing the IPO, but he learns a few more. The first day, 9 basic tracks are in the can. The second day, spurred by Ken's always-inspiring work ethic, 2 more of Lesa's songs which had previously been deemed "not quite ready" are birthed. Happy, healthy and poppy. A very much team effort, Lesa did have to put her foot down when Ken, Ning and I started to over-arrange a song. This is what differentiates one who hates XTC etc from those who don't. But hey man, we can play the minimalist game too.
It was awesome.
On the way home I realized something
Dateline mid-May 1990--
wow, I've been transported 15 years backwards. I wonder where I'll be in 15 years? Hopefully recording some pop music somewhere. But for now, boy am I tired. Last night was the prom and I got only one hour of sleep. Now I'm about to record in a real studio for the first time with my band the Mean Wyoming. Dan Isaacs is a guy we know who goes to Berkely School of Music, and hangs with us at Friendlys in Andover while we drink coffee and smoke cigarettes. He's got a 16 track studio in his mom's house.
Ok, we're getting drum sounds. This is taking a long time. They just told me I can hang loose for a while--onto getting other sounds. Yawn.
OY! Jarred awake by my name being said in the headphones. I fell asleep on my snare. And goddamnit, everyone is eating McDonalds. It's one hour later. They all went and got food while I fell asleep. Bastards. I guess I needed sleep more than food. And anyway, eating fastfood and recording isn't always a good idea.
So yeah, happy 15 years of recording, me. And thank you to the hot of studios I've played in:
-Sacrificial Orb-Andover, MA (I just made up that name, having remembered another crazy episode where I spastically broke an x-mas ornament that Dan had me believe had been in his family for 100 years--we called it the sacrifical orb)
-American University--Washington, DC
-Northampton Recordings-Noho, MA
-Studio .45 Hartford, MA
-Open Door Studio-Povidence, RI
