"The opening act was a guy called Henning Ohlenbusch. He fronts a Northampton-based band called School for the Dead. At first, I was convinced that he was nothing to write home about: a guy my age, with glasses and a beard, sounding like a mid-price cross between They Might Be Giants, The Sugarplastic, and Death Cab for Cutie. Halfway through his set, he played a song called "Photobooth Curtain." Although it had rather inane lyrics, there is a nice middle eight in which he sings "Don't be like that / You know better / Don't be like that girl." Eck, right? Well, after singing another verse and another chorus, he called for some audience participation. Amazingly, everyone was singing the middle eight over which he added the harmonies that end the song. It sent chills up my spine, it was so damn good.
After Henning stepped down (with the line "I hope you enjoyed my songs while you were waiting for me to get off the stage!"), a few minutes elapsed before Robyn strode up."
Appearently, I have a beard. Still, it's nice to see some totally unbiased comments like this. I'm gonna have to see what Sugarplastic sounds like and I think I checked out Death Cab for Cutie on Rhapsody but I'll have to re-explore them to see if our similarities lie any deeper than the callous reference to death in our band-names.
