Last night I took a half hour to just put my headphones on and listen to some music while resting my head on the desk. Remember in elementary school when they used to tell the class to rest our heads on our desks? It was a weird punishment that wasn't really a punishment.
Anyway, these are the songs that I listened to:
Yes - And You And I
Tom Petty - You Don't Know How It Feels
Dire Straits - Follow Me Home
Kind of a strange selection, I know, but all three of these songs have very unique mood-scape kind of feelings in their production and I wanted to listen a little closer.
In the Yes song, I got distracted by how amazing the guitar playing is, but I also discovered some crazy use of reverb. At one point during an acoustic guitar part that sort of bridges two sections of the song, the reverb just sort of fades out and guitar goes from being this big washy ethereal thing to being a close-up dry smaller thing.
In the Tom Petty song, I wanted to listen to the drums because I remembered them as being very natural and powerful. They are. Besides being really, really high up in the mix, you can easily hear the sound of the room that they are in. That natural reverberation becomes the home of all the sounds in the song. It's great.
The Dire Straits song has this really moody groove that is accompanied by waves. At the beginning of the song you just hear waves crashing and the slight hint of percussion instruments in the distance. These drums slowly get louder and closer as though you are walking along the shore towards a campfire party it's a smooth transition into the song and the rest of the song seems to somehow musically keep the free flowing relaxing waves crashing feeling throughout it.
That's all.
