Those are awesome reviews. Very well written, and every word is true.
WARNING: BORING MUSIC NERD TALK NEXT 2 MILES
Perhaps it's th etime of year, but I've mail-ordered a few more CDs recently. And got 'em.
One of the sounds of fall, for me, is 60's garage punk psych whatever. Like ever since that fall day in '88 when on a family visit to see my sister at UMass, I bought Love's first album and the Count Five's Psychotic Reaction, both on vinyl. I think I've told this story, so I'll stop.
All the guys in Count Five are listed as being 18-19. At the time, that seemed old.
Anyway, I saw that a European label re-released the Coutn Five album, with bonus tracks, better sound, etc. Half that album is awesome. The other half is cover tunes, and insipid originals.
I also got one of my all time faves, "The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators" (from 1966). If you are an audiophile, skip it. But to me, it's beautiful the way the Velvet Underground's "White Light White Heat" is. No one in the control room was paying attention to the fact that the VU meter was in the red the entire time.
That 13th Floor Elevators album is one that can get me through the daylight savings change where suddenly it's dark when your day is over. No one else I know likes this album.
Finally, I got Van Dyke Parks' 1968 "Song Cycle".
I gotta give this one some time. There's about 80 ideas going on at a time here. I think I'll eventually like it a lot. It'll be easier to get into than Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica".
