At the Aloha Steamtrain show on Saturday there was a feeling of nostalgia floating around the Elevens like the smoke that used float around the Baystate. Being both an excited Steamtrain fan as well as an honored opener with Spanish For Hitchhiking, I was a bundle of nerves. I was worried that nobody would watch us while the Red Sox game was on. I was worried the Steamtrain wouldn't be as good as I remembered. I was worried George Bush would win the election.
But hey, none of that came true! (ok, I'll have to wait until next week to find out about the election). The audience was appreciative of all the performers, the Aloha Steamtrain kicked ass just like they used to and I left the club feeling as if I had gotten my money's worth (even without paying). I think that's what made AH such a great part of the Valley music scene. There are lots of excellent songwriters, talented players, and great bands with lots of energy 'round here. But I can't think of any who put on a great show like the Steamtrain did. They were Northampton's answer to Queen.
As Henning stated, I'm saying goodbye to the music scene for a while. I'm going to spend some time learning how to be a dad, which is a very exciting. Tony has already been a great wealth of information, and the two of us have spent at least one car ride torturing Brian with discussions of diapers and child rearing. While part of me is sad to be leaving the boys (and girl) in my bands, I feel really lucky to have played with you all. Thanks.
