I went out to the pop open mic at The Elevens last night. It was hosted by Dennis Crommett and Philip Price. When I showed up, the atmosphere was nice in the bar. There were carved jack-o-lanterns on the stage flickering orange candle light and there was a small but friendly crowd of people watching a woman singing along with some prerecorded backing tracks that were coming out of her boombox which had a microphone aiming at it.
I also saw, Timmy T and Patty play and then a strangely familiar face took the stage (don't be scared, the face was connected to a person). It was Cliff Hillis, who we shared the stage with at T.T. The Bear's last year at the International Pop Overthrow. He's from Delaware but happened to be in town and stopped in at the open mic to find that he knew me AND Philip and Dennis from playing with them in Boston, too. Crazy.
Cliff played a set of three nice songs and then I played. Journal of Lies, Map, Save My Place. I also plugged our show on Saturday.
After me was Carmady (sp?) who played balalaika and ukele and he was followed by a guy who set up a drum machine and sequencer, took off his sweat suit to reveal short shorts, a tank top, and head and arm bands, and danced. It was funny for about a minute and I admired the guy for his bravery.
Then I left.
