Perhaps Tony Randall stole his thunder, but I was shocked to learn of the passing of the greatest jazz drummer, Elvin Jones. It wasn't on Salon, nor did I hear it on NPR (both of which I check several times daily)--not that they are the be-all, end-all of news, but come on--Elvin Jones!! The man was a monster of power and finesse all at once, like a boxer with ballet shoes. I regret that I never saw him play live. What an inspiring guy to hear, with the constant wash of cymbals and impossible snare/kick/tom accents...
Like reading Ulysses, you just say "not all are created equal". Just be glad you're alive to receive these gifts.

Ruth Keating, the multi-tasking member of The Malarkies recently met him at a drum clinic. See here!
