Not many people have heard of The Cranes but there's an animal-name band with a female vocalist. One could cheat and say Stereolab (rador retriever) or the Bee-52s. Which brings me to this- why so many bands with aviation names fronted by women? B-52s natch but also Jefferson Airplane, Joan Jett, Helicopter Helicopter. The lead singer of Led Zeppelin with the luxurious golden mane of hair and the Janis Joplin-like wail was actually thought to be a butch woman by a reviewer back when they first started out.
