I took a long break from listening to the four mixes we have so far, in part because I left the cd in the same case as Sinatra's "Hello Young Lovers". It was good to listen to them with fresh ears. Some things I felt last month have changed, others were confirmed. Overall, I'm happier with the latest (12/28) mixes than with the first batch. I think Henning has done a really good job of trying to make everyone content. Part of me wishes we would use these just as demos, or for the chain cd exclusively, and then book some time in a studio with someone else producing. To me, some objective ears behind the mixing board might be very beneficial. But I also respect our diy approach, and I think the final work will be great. So my concise comments:
Martha: What is the sound that carries the melody in the intro? I'm not that fond of it. I liked the toy xylophone thing better. I also wish the group vocals in the chorus would come in one the last chorus, and on the others it was just Henning (or Henning more up front). I like the ending a lot.
Omnivore: the verse sections with just bass/drums/vocals seem weak. I like this mix MUCH better than the first, especially the vocals in the bridge. My main gripe is the drums - performance is great but recording seems weird. The splashy cymbal in the chorus is too loud, and the toms lack definition. I know, since when did I become a drum tech? Shut me up. The guitars sound better now.
One Lady Dancing: I like it. I think we play it better now, but it probably doesn't make sense to re-record it.
Uncomfortable: On some cd players, the bass has sounded weak, but on my nice stereo it sounds fine. Everything else sounds great. The mix isn't too busy, there aren't too many parts, everything is supporting the vocals. Nice job.
