I have been getting more and more excited for Friday with Freedy. It will be my second time opening for him, as I was lucky enough to share the stage sometime around '98 with the Maggies. Which started me thinking this morning during a staff meeting (as I stared into the coffee, I started spinning... cue dreamy music): who would I most want to open for. I've had some really rewarding experiences opening shows for musicians I really admire, and finding out they are sweet, down-to-earth people in real life (Freedy, Semisonic, Chick Graning of Scarce, the Nields, Jaque Burnel of the Stranglers) and some awkward, unpleasant concerts with people who were Rock Star Turds (Squeeze, Live). In a way, it's sometimes easier to keep the image you have of an artist pristine, hoping that they are really everything you imagine.
So who would you like to open for? My top five of all time:
Prince
Queen
The Posies
Frank Zappa
Elvis Presley
Granted, three of those are unrealistic for logistical reasons. Maybe I'll get a Posies' show someday.
