An actual School For The Dead dream last night. I don't remember many exact plot details, only certain characteristics...
In a King Lear-like move, Bob Dylan, while still alive, has given away all the rights to his albums. He has chosen an unknown band he likes for each album and authorized them to exclusively sell copies of the albums at the band's shows. The bands not only inherit his benediction as one of his favorites but also get to keep all money the sales bring in. School For The Dead has the rights to "The Times They Are A-Changin'" which we sell for the reasonable price of $10.95 per disc. Each one of the bands Dylan has picked is also authorized to sell copies of Dylan's latest, "Love & Theft," which we charge an outrageous $35.oo per copy. In other words, if you're just Joe Schmo and you want "Times They Are A-Changin'" you can only buy the album by going to a SFTD performance and buying it there. If you want "Love & Theft," you can go to a performance by any band on Dylan's list but that's it. You can't (legally) buy the albums any other way. But we have the prices backwards, don't you think? We should be charging more for the one only we sell.
Other goings-on: I'm filling in on bass for this particular show and Ken is unhappy with some of the things I'm playing. He prefers Max's playing and pleads with me not to play this jumpy thing that I came up with for one of the songs. It's a very classic Humbert-like Ari vs.Tony debate. The simplest little thing like using or not using a distortion pedal on some riff in some song and it inspires all these reasons why or why not to do it. Like anyone in the audience will actually notice or care but it means the world to us serious artistes.
Also: While playing the show, I'm all panicked that time is running out to complete my Christmas shopping before the malls close. Zeke Fiddler has graciously volunteered to pick a few things up for me. Nonetheless, he insists that he pay for the presents himself. I tell him no. But he insists. Only problem is, he has no money and has to arrange a Christmas party where he charges admission to make money to buy my presents. This will take up so much time that it'd be easier if I just play the show and do the shopping myself but now that I've asked him, he really wants to do it his way and so I just assent and get back to performing.
Meaning? Christmas party- something to do with our upcoming Living room party? Brian has to leave early in reality, therefore my panic about the malls closing. Soon as we start playing, the clock will be running out on Brian's availability for the night. The argument with Ken? Maybe me using my Humbert experience to wonder when debate will arise as to certain parts I play in SFTD songs. Not sure why it's Ken and not Henning, maybe because Henning was in Humbert and Ken and I are equals in SFTD just like Ari and I were in Humbert. And Zeke? Well, I just saw him at the cookout last weekend. Bob Dylan? Maybe SFTD will get the thumbs-up from a celebrity soon somehow due to our chain CD campaign that will hopefully be fruitful for us.
Gotta go. Ice cream bus is here.
